Birthdays: Nicholas - 8, Donovan - 6, Lily - 4, and Doug too!

I'm now woefully behind in putting up pictures… but hopefully I can catch up. First, a few pictures from the kids birthdays this fall…

Donovan turned six on October 7th. He had just lost both of his two front teeth. He now has another wiggly one on the bottom. Donovan's cake was a volcano, with lava, a forest, a lake, and some dinosaurs roaming around…

As a 6-year old, Donovan has a lot of friends in his kindergarten class, but no apparent best friend. He is well known as being "silly" - and it seems that all of the other parents in the kindergarten classroom have heard about Donovan. Nonetheless, he has been working really hard at getting rid of "unexpected behavior" and hasn't had to visit the principal's office in the past two months!! : ) Donovan really loves to learn about different things, and he loves to practice what he is learning. He really enjoys cutting and writing his letters, and is learning to read. And, he has just started to enjoy building legos (or actually building anything)! Donovan is a great bike rider, enjoys gymnastics (though he still struggles to keep the sillies out), and is really excited to be cross-country skiing (especially when I get to be his coach).

Nicholas turned eight on November 12th. We think Nicholas' cake was a planet - but neither Doug nor I can remember. I think the most important part was that he visited the candy store earlier in the day on his birthday, chose out all of his favorite candies, and then decorated the cake. I made the angel food cake earlier in the day. The first cake I made was a total disaster (leaked out of the pan and all over the oven) and the second didn't rise well. Fortunately, I don't have to make another angel food cake for many, many months!

At 8 years old, Nicholas is developing a very thoughtful personality. He is very polite and very interested in how other people are feeling - but he still loves to tease Lily. He is a very confident person and would very much like to be the decision-maker (or the parent) in the family. Nicholas is very social, and has a lot of friends. His (and Donovan's) best friends continue to be our neighbors twins - who are also eight. Nicholas loves to be active - playing tag, biking, using a scooter, skiing, sledding, making snow forts… He is also taking ski and gymnastic lessons - and really enjoys both. Nicholas is very responsible about doing his homework - he has to read for 20 minutes each night - and all of this reading practice is making him a very fluid and fluent reader. He loves to be the person that reads the bedtime story!

Lily turned four on November 26th, during our trip to Wisconsin. Lily again got a barbie cake, which she LOVED!

At four years old, Lily is a very confident and very social girl. She isn't shy about anything - and is happy either playing by herself or finding a new friend. She has really started to play a lot of imaginary games. One of her favorite things to do is to have tea parties. This  entails setting up the chairs to make a train, checking the map on the wall to find our path (which always involves lava), and then making MANY trips over the lava (with special pretend socks) followed by more train ride, until we finally make it to the tea party! She has also recently become very interested in barbie dolls (dresses them, puts them to bed, takes them on trips, etc., etc.). This fall Lily started a dance class (ballet and tap) that she really loves! She was in her first performance in December and LOVED it!!! And, last but not least, she continues to love anything related to the movie "Frozen". She has all of the songs memorized, and sings and dances to them ALL the time!

It didn't take long to figure it out… (Lily with Hael)

Doug turned 38 two weeks ago… Fortunately I was spared making angel food cake from scratch, as Doug instead opted for Grandma Shoulberg's special lemon meringue pie! : )
