After a week of Nicholas having a horrible stomach "bug", he finally had enough energy to leave the house. It turns out that this happened to coincide with the first sunny day that we have had in weeks.
We took advantage of the better weather (though still unseasonably cool) and the much improved health of Nicholas by spending much of our weekend outdoors. We spent Saturday morning canoeing on the Connecticut River (and trying to let Nicholas catch some fish -- no luck) and spent Sunday at the Plum Island beach with Doug's mother (Nana) and his sister's family (Beth, Dave, Nathan, and Benji).
Just before he became sick last week, he decided that he was done sleeping in his crib. Since July 28th, Nicholas has been sleeping in his big-boy bed in his new bigger bedroom (our former guestroom). His vocabulary is growing daily. His list of new words includes, among others: canoe, help, lure, marshmallow, puppy, dibble-dibble-dopp (the sound of rain), knock-knock, tick-tock.... He has also started to put 2 words together. Some of his favorite two-word combinations are: "up puppy" and "no pat" (both from the Dr. Suess book "Hop On Pop"), and blue ball (a.k.a. blueberry). Finally, as of yesterday, he seems to think that he is ready to start potty-training. For a long-time he's been interested in flushing the toilet, but he now insists on sitting on the real toilet. We've had limited success, but he is thrilled to use toilet paper and flush after even the slightest progress.

Nicholas and Nana.

Nana and her boys.

The boys - looking for sand fleas.

Nicholas and daddy - enjoying the big waves!

Nana turned Nicholas and Nathan into wonderful "Mer-men". Here Nathan and Nicholas find the hidden knees.
Some more pictures from the day at the beach....

Thank you so much for sharing your blog with us, Van Citters family! We love it! We also love Nicholas' name for blueberries. Thanks for the clarification. We had a chuckle over that!
