We returned early yesterday morning (3am) from our trip to the West. We spent the last day of summer vacation looking for Monarch caterpillars (found none), playing with water balloons (the kids and the house got pretty wet), and swimming at the pool.
Today, Nicholas started first grade. He was (and still is) very excited to be a first grade student - and is very excited to be able to see his friends again! He has the same teacher as last year (Mrs. Landry) and has nine of the same students in his class (they stay with the same teacher for kindergarten and first grade).
When we took the kids to the bus this morning, Donovan tried to sneak on behind Nicholas (we caught him) and Lily burst into tears as soon as the bus departed (I think she wanted to go too).
Nicholas - ready for first grade.
Donovan, Nicholas, and Lily - waiting for the bus.
Donovan, Lily, and I had a very nice morning and early afternoon. We drove over to Lily's new pre-school (she starts the last week of September) and did a lot of playing in castles set up throughout the house. When we went to pick up Nicholas, Donovan decided that he would surprise everyone by wearing his penguin Halloween costume. He must have been boiling (it was about 80 degrees and blazing sun), but he wouldn't take it off. The kids on the bus thought he was pretty funny, and Nicholas was pretty amused as well. : )
Donovan, the joker.
Nicholas - at the end of the first day.

Nicholas is most excited about having two recesses - and really loves the second recess (substantially longer than the first one). He was happy to see Mrs. Landry and Mrs. Congdon - and earned a button for the button jar by showing the kindergarteners the hand sign for being quiet. (Earning a button is a pretty big deal - and when the button jar is full the kids have a special party.)
