Old Faithful to Yellowstone Lake

I've been delayed in posting the rest of our pictures from our August vacation to the west, but I'll try to finish up soon... The third day of our trip started out great, and ended on a rough note. We spent the morning in the geyser basin near Old Faithful, then drove North and East to pass by the Yellowstone Canyon. We were hoping to visit the Mud Pots, but one of the forest fires in Yellowstone had forced the park rangers to close off all parking areas near the fire (including the parking lots for the Mud Pot area). So, we continued down to Yellowstone Lake - checked into our hotel - and spent an hour or more at the edge of the lake. The lake shore near the Yellowstone Lake Hotel is covered in little fragments of black, shiny obsidian that are mixed among pebbles and sand. The kids loved relaxing near the water. Our day ended on a low note with Lily slamming her thumb in the door and Nicholas getting a stomach bug that put an early end to our "fancy" dinner at the hotel restaurant. After returning to our hotel room by 7:30, the kids and Doug were asleep within 30 minutes - and I lay awake for hours listening to the wind blow off the lake...

Doug took an early morning walk through the geyser basin ...

Nicholas and Donovan really enjoyed catching grasshoppers this summer (both in New Hampshire and on our trip out west).
Nicholas the photographer - a view from the backseat.
We loved giving the kids the camera and learning what interested them. These are pine needles that they were using as "pokers"
